Green Cleaning

The title of this entry is not very creative, I admit. But it fits the topic.

I recently got a job at a cafe which I love, but at the end of the day, all the cleaners I use send my allergies into quite a state. Windex, bleach, etc… I have never been able to tolerate the smell of ammonia; I can remember my 7 year old self protesting when, before dinner, my mom delegated me the job of Windex-ing our glass-top table in the dining room.

1. Method Pink Grapefruit All-Purpose Cleaner has been my favorite cleaner ever since I discovered Method about 5 years ago. I’m thinking about venturing into other scents, because the pink grapefruit makes me a touch queasy if I use too much of it in a confined space (bathroom). I’m waiting until my bottles run out (accidentally picked up another one when I didn’t know I still had a full one… c’est la vie).
2. Heinz Distilled White Vinegar smells great. It can be used for cooking and cleaning, clearing out drains, adding it to your laundry, and over 1000 other uses (click here for a great list)!
3. Green Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner smells good, which is a big deal for me when it comes to cleaners (if you couldn’t already tell). It also works well. You wouldn’t be able to tell from my rental bathroom, which is corroded past repair, but my mother-in-law (a chemist and very attentive to VOCs, or volatile chemicals) used it to get off some seriously tough stains on a house they recently purchased.
4. Method Fresh Air Laundry Detergent is another thing I plan on experimenting with other scents on, just because I can :) I love the super-concentrated formula which means I use less soap but my clothes get just as clean! I think you can also use it as a pre-treater, but I’m still stuck to the not-particularly-as-green Stain Stick to get out my coffee spill evidence.

PS: As you may have noticed from my fancy graphic, I have been reunited with a copy of Paint Shop Pro X, which might be outdated in some worlds, but works just fine for my current purposes :D

  1. We have been using Mrs. Meyers All Purpose cleaner. You buy it in concentrate so it lasts a really long time. I’ve just been mixing it in my old Method bottles, so it’s really easy to mix. And it smells good to boot.
