Tabletop Topics

My fifth anniversary is coming up this weekend, so weirdly I have been thinking about dishes. I’ve been getting really into browsing Etsy in every moment of spare time. If I were getting married today, I would set up an Etsy registry and sign up for a bunch of pretty vintage china.

When Doug and I got married we registered for Crate and Barrel Aspen dinnerware, and I am still so happy with it. No chips, breaks, or anything in the past five years (knock on wood). We use it for two to three meals daily and have used it when large groups come over instead of buying (and subsequently throwing out) paper partyware. If something were to break I like knowing that they still carry it. I didn’t register for “fancy” china because honestly I wasn’t, and still really am not, a “fine china” person. But I was so ill-informed. I didn’t know all the options out there! Still, I probably wouldn’t use it. But… my collector side begs to differ. Now, I just want to have an amazing, colorful, retro, collection to gaze at 24/7.  The struggle!

The good thing is that my white set can mix and match with anything! Especially these patterns which I am totally crushing on.

Villeroy and Bosch, Acapulco (’83-’91)

This is it. This is the one. I am sure of it. Those prices, though! This would be an amazing thing to get pieces of here and there and build up a set over time. Hint, hint; family and friends.  More drool worthy pieces here on Etsy.

Studio Nova, Hi-Fi (’85-’87)

I passed up a set of this at Goodwill a couple of years ago and to this day I regret it! (Stereo would be an OK one too but Hi-Fi has that special something!) Check out more pieces here. This similar pattern is cool too.

Figgjo Lotte

This set is not as bright and vivid as the two patterns above but the cute little people on them get me every time. They are so adorable and I love the Scandinavian flair! Shop Figgjo on Etsy.

Honorable mention: Fiestaware. Every time I dine somewhere that uses Fiestaware I want to go out and buy up a huge mix and match bunch and serve all my food on the bright and fresh colors.

Did you register for fine (or not so fine) china? Are you still in love with your pattern, or has your taste evolved over time? Do you know any patterns I need to check out? Let me know in the comments :)

Curtain Call

There are two things I have found that quickly turn a house into a home: hanging art on the walls, and adding the finishing touch to windows by way of curtains.

Lucky for us, we had a plethora of curtain options at our disposal for f-r-e-e thanks to our many-windowed Kansas bungalow (seriously, that place had no less than fifteen windows, most of which were dressed), so we pulled many of them out of storage and put them to work.

First up, the bedroom. This addition was one of the first things we tackled after moving in last May. I don’t want the neighbors spying on me pulling on my PJ’s every night or getting ready every morning, thankyouverymuch.

Bedroom Curtains

I like waking up with the light (getting out of bed in a dark room is almost impossible for me) so I thought going light with the curtains would be a great strategy. The heavier black iron-look curtain rod (here) helps polish things off, and the simple ring finials are so chic. The masculine rod balances the subtle feminine flower pattern in the curtains. We previously used these in the guest room in our Kansas house. Discontinued IEKA; we got these on clearance over two years ago.

Secondly, the living room. I wanted something navy to go go across the room of our dark teak credenza. The carpet and walls in the living room are really light and I thought that dark curtains would look really chic.

Living Room

These are the only curtains that we didn’t already have. I found this great fabric at IKEA that had an interesting pattern that I liked, and was pretty masculine so Doug was pretty excited. I flexed my long-dormant sewing muscle and whipped these up in about two hours. I’d like to add a lining and they are currently hemmed with pins, because I am debating if I like the one-to-two inch pool or if I want them to be a touch shorter. What do you think?

The office. Or guest room. Or catch-all room. No photographic evidence, sorry! We recently installed organizational shelving in here and it now houses all of our books and media. Curtains will protect them from the UV rays which can/will yellow the pages. This room gets amazing afternoon light and will be where I shoot most of the items for my Etsy store. I don’t want anything with a strong color distorting the sunlight, though. We grabbed a pretty silver rod from Home Depot’s Home Decorator Collection, which proved to be much easier to install than the Lowe’s Allen + Roth curtain rods we’d bought previously (note to self). We slapped up two cream-colored Chesapeake curtains from Target that we already had on hand from our old bedroom. Perfection!

Dining Room Curtains

The dining room was the last room to be curtain-ed, but I’m really, really happy to be able to use the now discontinued green vine IKEA panels. I didn’t even realize it until we hung them up, but the tree outside has red berries on it just like the pattern in the curtain panels. We used the KVARTAL system by IKEA which was surprisingly easy to put up. I was worried about sturdiness but I’m happy to report that it’s really much more heavy duty than I expected. We don’t close these much anyway, so it’s really mostly for looks, and the room seems much warmer with them up.

2-Second Tip: Hardware Swap

When we got married we used most of our Target gift cards to get two pretty nice bedside tables. Gotta have a place to put your charging phone, a lamp, and a glass of water while you snooze, right? Lately I have been giving them the side-eye because their traditional look did not fit in with the mid-century boho look I have been leaning toward lately.

A couple quick impulse buys at Anthropologie fixed that quickly.

Bedside Table Hardware Update

I don’t always gravitate to the mix-and-match look, but for these simple black tables I like it. The upper and lower are the same on each bedside table which makes sure they still look like a set.

I don’t know why it took me so long to do this, but the side tables look so much more eclectic and chic now! We swapped out the kitchen cabinet pulls at our Kansas house before selling it too, and it quickly brought the cabinets from 1930 to 2012 in, seriously, an hour’s work.

Even if you aren’t near an Anthro, there are great knobs at World Market, and even some nice traditional ones at Target or Home Depot if you just need a quick-something-new.
