Moving Week!

It’s moving week!

I’m so excited to load up our truck and head on out to my native homeland! I’m sure “excited” won’t be the word I use by the end of the week, after we drive three days, arrive at our destination, unload the truck, and flop down asleep (probably) on an unmade mattress in the middle of the living room floor or something. I know it’s something everyone says every time they move, but how did we ever get so much stuff?! I’m already mentally preparing myself for complete and utter exhaustion.

While I mostly focus on home-related things, I do fancy myself as a sometime travel blogger, so expect a few more “travel-y” posts about California. And on that note, I thought it would be fitting to turn this transition week over into some very capable hands–a few guest bloggers graciously agreed to post about some of their favorite California cities: San Diego, Temecula, and Los Angeles! Let’s be honest: I’m super proud of myself for planning ahead!

I hope you enjoy this week of getting to know Southern California, and make sure to check out each guest poster’s blog!

I can’t wait to share pictures of our new place, our new neighborhood, and new life! However, I know there’s going to be some down time– I don’t even know when we’ll get the internet set up at our new apartment! Thanks for joining us along the way, though. I’ll try to check back in (using coffee shop wi-fi if need be) with our unpacking, setting up, and job hunting updates. You can also follow me on twitter if you’re suffering from withdrawals.

An Ode to In-Flight Magazines

If there’s one thing I like to do on the plane, it’s read a magazine. Usually it’s too bumpy or my neighbors are too irritating to dive into a lengthy classic novel, but the bite-size length of most magazine articles are just what I need to make the trip fly (yeah, I went there).

Yesterday, I had planned on playing iPhone games for the majority of my travel time, however, bubble mania one addictive game in particular apparently required that I be online to play? Wha? So I turned to the airline-provided magazine and was pleasantly surprised. Actually, whenever I fly American, I read most of their mag but I was pleased to find that United’s publication, Hemispheres, was just as good, if not better.

I read a light piece on road tripping, learned the must-dos if I ever find myself in Seattle, and more.

The layout was especially fresh and pleasing. So, I came to a conclusion and decided to write a post about it: Airline magazines are super underrated! I mean, travel is an interest of mine, so naturally I’m drawn to most of the topics at hand. But unlike Condé Nast Traveler, for example, I can actually see myself seeing and doing the things included in these articles, not just fantasizing about it. Next time you’re flying, burn through one of these before reaching for the one you bought at the travel shop before boarding.

My all-time favorite regular mags are Sunset and Southern Living. What are yours?

My Bags are Packed…

Note, that says bags, not boxes. I’m heading out to California tonight to fête my dad’s hard-earned retirement, then do so some apartment hunting for the remainder of the week.

“Packing sure makes me tired!”

I’m eager to…

  • celebrate my pops
  • find the perfect place
  • come back to Kansas to blitz-pack the rest of our stuff
  • enjoy the celebration party our friends have planned for our departure (totally humbling)
  • arrive at our new place in CA!

Note: I did not list “drive from Kansas to California” in that because I know it’s going to happen but I am sooooo not looking forward to it.

So, I plan on getting some posts up here and there this week, but I can’t promise a lot because it just might get crazy!
