Writing Elsewhere: Feminist Friday

Today I am over at XOXO, Lib taking part in her Feminist Friday series. It is such an honor to be included in this conversation. I’ve shared about how I became a feminist, what it’s like living on the West Coast vs. the Midwest, and what feminism looks like in my daily life. I’ve been inspired by the interviewees who’ve come before me and I’m very much looking forward to reading those that follow. Please head over and check it out!

A preview:

What does feminism mean to you?
To me, feminism means recognizing my inherent worth in comparison to those around me. Spoiler alert: we all have equal worth! Our opinions are worthy to be shared, our feelings are worthy of being felt, and our goals are worthy of being explored. After a lifetime of low self-esteem, becoming feminist has helped me gain more self-confidence. I wouldn’t say those things are one and the same, but in my journey, both aspects have helped each other grow.

Okay, Long Enough

Jan2015

I’m back. Not posting since October is pretty much unbelievable. If you were to tell me I’d go this long without updating I’d say you were crazy, but here we are.

This fall and winter there has been so much blogging about blogging. The state of blogging, what things used to be like, and where blogs are going in the future. Taking a break from writing has actually been really nice for me. Do I want my blog to be my “brand” and treat it like a part time job (that I make no money from)? Or, do I want to blog the way I did when I started out, to show friends (and now strangers) how things are shaping up around my home, and random things I like, and pretty pictures of the places I go?

Since I took a break from writing in the ole blog but didn’t take a break from reading blogs, noting what works for some bloggers and what works for other bloggers, I’m confident that I want to do the second option from above. Post about what’s meaningful to me, not what I think people want to read or what I can conveniently sneak onto my Pinterest boards in hopes it will get popular. (Although, I probably will still sneak things onto my Pinterest boards).

That said, believe it or not I actually have a handful of posts half-written that will be hauled out and dusted off, and photos to work on. So expect more from me soon!

Decorating with the Jacksons

And I’m not talkin’ 20-dollar bills (although that would help).

As usual, I have been dreaming up potential living spaces more than ever. This kind of activity has only been increased by constant stalking of real estate listings, looking for the perfect bargain (sometime late summer, maybe?) My problem is that I’m phenomenally indecisive and can picture myself in many different kinds of places, decorated in many different styles. Kind of decor-induced multiple personality disorder, perhaps?

Now, since this kind of thing is my hobby, it’s a wonderful problem to have. However, at one point I entertained the idea, “What if I really didn’t like decorating? How do people who hate thinking about this kind of thing cope?” I remembered seeing pieces and sets of furniture entitled “Jackson” at all kinds of different stores, and decided it would be really funny if that was a person’s default way of decorating. Does it have my name on it? Okay then, I’ll take it!

Jackson, no accessories

Sectional // Dining set // Bed
Desk chair // Desk

Everything here is titled “Jackson” so it’s kind of decorating no brainer. You know, this really doesn’t look like a half bad place… The modern couch and bed balance out the industrial-style dining set… the office chair lends a kind of bachelor pad look. I suppose it’s livable; it just needs some colorful accents…

Jackson, with accessories

Pull-down wall hanging // Joshua Tree pillow // Kilim pillow
Ikat pillow // Floor lamp // Plant // Desk accessories

Ahh… much better. I couldn’t resist. I really didn’t add that much, but already it looks like a person lives here! Just think how it would be with rugs, windows, lighting options…

Am I the only weirdo who entertains these kinds of fantasies? I hope not! Am I the only one who then creates inspiration boards out of them? Maybe! Hashtag design blog problems.
