Good Reads #4

Today’s GREAT read will change the way you eat and the way you think about food.

In In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan makes the claim that most of what we eat today is not, in fact, food but instead “edible foodlike product” engineered by science.  It makes sense, if you think about it, when it comes to most boxed meals a person can get in a grocery store–dehydrated this, enriched that, most things we eat go through so much processing that even something that appears simple has an ingredient list (mostly unpronounceable) that takes up half of the side panel on the box.

He narrows down his “Manifesto” to this easy-to-remember slogan: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” He adds another rule of thumb–shop around the perimeter of the grocery store, that’s where the actual vegetables, the fresh meat, and the fresh bread are located… makes sense, doesn’t it? As a former adherent of the “I can’t cook!” crowd, I would encourage anyone skeptical about using actual ingredients to give it a go. Ask a friend who is good at cooking for help… healthy cooking is in fact easy!

DIY Mexican Hot Chocolate

I finally got my butt in gear and made the Christmas presents I had been planning on doing all season… one week before Christmas, wooo!

DIY Hot Chocolate
In progress!!

This is the first time I’ve DIY-ed presents for my loved ones and, thing is, I’m really proud of them! I made home-made Mexican hot chocolate mix out of powdered milk, cocoa, and copious amounts of sugar! I also added a little bit of cinnamon and an even litter bit of chili power, and I must say (I sampled some) it’s quite tasty! Picture time!

Now to add some attractive ribbon and hand them out! Also, gotta love the irony of hot chocolate in a Tostito's jar!

Before this, I made myself dinner, using a recipe that was mostly vague guidelines that my friend gave me yesterday… and I think they turned out delicious! I now give you…. rosemary potatoes…

Rosemary Potatoes
potatoes, olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper, paprika...

Soup on the Brain

After reading this article, I want to begin avoiding food that comes in cans! Now I am glad I registered for that crock-pot at Target, because soups don’t seem to be that difficult to make–start it in the morning and have it that night, or make a ton and freeze it… this is totally doable!

I have no idea why I have soup on the brain so much right now. I really really want some french onion, complete with the cheesy bread on top, but as I’m at school with no resources I think i’ll go down to Fresh and Easy and get some instant miso. Yayyyy sodium!

Soups to learn to make:
Minestrone (Actually, I’ve got this one covered.)
French onion
Chicken and rice
Black bean and lime (like at the Main St Deli in Mcpherson!)
Broccoli and cheese
Lentil
Butternut squash (a challenge?)
