Tip from a Chemist

If you buy a new vase on clearance from Target, like I did, you have to get the red clearance sticker off. Then you have to figure out how to get the sticky residue off. I had heard that mineral oil does the trick, but I do not nor have I ever owned mineral oil.
Luckily, Doug, the professional Smart Guy, mumbled something about a “universal solvent,” rummaged through the cabinet, and then got the stickers off of three–yes three! vases in the house by using a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover.
So smart!

Zucchini Boat

I guess you could call this my Pinterest Challenge, part two.

Pinning dream DIYs and not following through seems to be common, although all the completed challenges linked to the bottom of YoungHouseLove.com and BowerPower.com, etc. yesterday, show how with a little inspiration, projects can get completed. I was so excited to see how many people tackled projects!

Well, I’m going to actually try to tackle some recipes I’ve been pinning. Cooking is almost easier than DIYing because, well this is me as an example, while a coat of paint dries it’s easier to wander off and forget about your project. Cooking something on the stove or leaving the oven on would, I hope, demand a little more attention. So, yesterday I took one of the three giant (over 12 inches) zucchinis given to me by my Mother in Law and made these zucchini boats.

Actually, I didn’t follow any recipe. The only thing I did that I saw on Pinterest was make the boats themselves. Whatever else I put in was just my “let’s use up this produce from the fridge before it spoils” effort.

My boats. I used zucchini, tomato, green pepper, onion, black beans, tuna, creole seasoning, salt, and topped it with Swiss cheese. Next time I want more zest in it, so I’ll use more tomato (only had one on hand this time) and will definitely use more cheese–probably mix some shredded cheddar into the filling. All in all, this tasted good and was a good way to use up a lot of veggies!

The Big Reveal

Yes, although I would have preferred to post this at a normal blogging hour, (like 10-ish which is my goal,) I figured slipping this one in during the evening would be better than waiting till tomorrow. Oh wait. Tomorrow I have another reveal.

Anyway, you remember the Pinterest Challenge, yes? Well, as you can see from that old post, I decided to do a double whammy and do I guess the “Big” part in this title is misleading. This was possibly the easiest DIY ever DIYed.

It involved buying a new, pretty shiny, faux stainless steel picture frame from Target (approx $7) and some dry erase markers. I have a stash of maps–you may have seen some of them in the office in my recent home tour. Well, I love maps with lots of water and decided British Columbia would fit the bill nicely. I cut a piece to size, inserted it, and planned a week’s worth of meals.

Our kitchen walls are plaster so I’m not going to attempt to hang this up (nails are a disaster in here) so for now it takes up valuable real estate on our tiny counter. I was considering using magnets to put it on the refrigerator but it’s surprisingly heavy. I will come up with a solution someday.

Side note: meal planning is excellent. It makes grocery shopping and takes the guesswork out of “what should we have for dinner?” Yes,  you can cheat and swap meals. We had stuffed zucchini tonight (more on that tomorrow) and BBQ meatballs yesterday. Oh well! I just erase the “completed” meal and have the others to choose from. :)

Did you participate? You inspired by me to make a dry-erase note board? Please comment! I love comments!
